MYSTERY OF THE JOYITA
No trace has yet been found of the missing motor vessel Joyita, which disappeared three weeks ago while on a short voyage in the South Pacific.
Search aircraft have covered thousands of square miles of ocean between Samoa and the Tokelaus, but the fate of the vessel and the 25 people on board remains completely unknown.
Fears are held that the vessel may have suffered a sudden disaster, although her construction, which includes extensive cork insulation in her holds, is believed to make her virtually unsinkable. The master of the vessel, Captain Thomas Henry Miller, is an experienced mariner.
Speculation in Apia is increasing as the days pass without any wreckage or sign of life being discovered. The search is continuing, but hope is fading.
